How to create a stylish, yet homely Living Room

A well-dressed home goes beyond the realms of style it’s about creating a space that feels like home, unique to you and the ultimate place to recharge.

Our styled spaces have been created by our in-house stylist Lucy, with this philosophy in mind. The Nest – the living area - and Studio Verde – the kitchen dining area - are homely designs featuring the best of Orsinas varied homeware collection.

Every piece in The Nest was chosen with longevity in mind — furniture with enduring shapes, accessories that can be moved from room to room, and a neutral foundation that allows for easy seasonal updates. A throw can change with the weather, a cushion can nod to a new trend, and a candleholder can move from hallway console to bedside table without feeling out of place.

Explore Lucy’s top tips in how to create a homely, stylish space that stands the test of time.

 Begin with neutral statement piece

This will create a strong, palatable base to build upon with accessories, colour and texture. Choosing a neutral sofa, rug or curtains creates a calm space that can be modified as the seasons change, rotating festive and occasional décor.

Decide what you will use the room for the most

Before styling a space, ensure you designs are practical for the things you love to do at home, be that entertaining, reading or having family movie nights. A cosy reading nook can be a great place to unwind – a perfectly positioned lamp and a soft throw will be ideal for this space.

As a rule of thumb, choose 3 main colours to work with

This is known as the triadic colour scheme, which has been part of interior design for decades. Traditionally, the base colour should occupy roughly 60% of the overall design, the second colour 30% and the accent colour 10%. This approach can be seen The Nest, with cream, black and brown shades.

Incorporate and layer textiles

Introducing soft textures such as rugs, cushions and throws create a balance between strong statement pieces and soft, cosy comforts. These pieces make it easier to settle in and relax – making the space feel much more like home.

Consider lighting carefully

Lighting is one of the most essential elements in creating a soft, inviting atmosphere. Table lamps, floor lamps and lightshades are great options and can be layered throughout the room. Choosing what lighting works best for you will depend on the purpose of the room at the beginning of your designs.
